What is DBM

Demineralized human bone in clinically distinct forms

Demineralized bone matrix, commonly called DBM, is human allograft bone that has undergone processing to remove much of its mineral content while retaining portions of the native bone matrix.

EvoGraft DBM is not a single product. It is a portfolio of putties, composites, cancellous forms and cortical fibers designed to give the surgical team different options for filling, packing, spanning or conforming to non-structural bone voids.

Material
Processed human allograft bone
Available forms
Putty, crush mix, strips, cubes, fibers, fiber boats and blended fibers
Selection
By composition, geometry, dimensions and volume
Handling
Ready-to-use or hydration-dependent, according to configuration

Why multiple forms

Because bone voids are not all alike

A confined defect, an irregular void and a broad posterolateral space do not present the same handling requirements. The EvoGraft DBM portfolio allows the clinician to select a graft geometry aligned with the anatomy and procedural plan.

  • Moldable forms

Putty and crush configurations can be shaped and distributed within irregular spaces.

  • Compressible forms

DBM strips and cubes can be compressed for placement and are designed to conform within the intended graft site.

  • Fibrillar forms

Loose cortical fibers create an interconnected graft architecture that can be hydrated, packed or combined with other graft materials according to product labeling.

  • Pre-shaped forms

Fiber boats provide cortical fibers in an established geometry for more controlled placement across a defined area.

  • Composite forms

Crush Mix and OsteoBlend combine different bone components to create distinct handling and scaffold characteristics.

Selection

Select by biology, geometry and handling

The surgical team may consider several practical questions when selecting a DBM configuration.

  • Does the site require a moldable, particulate, compressible or pre-shaped graft?
  • Will the product be used alone or with autograft, bone marrow aspirate or another graft material?
  • How much graft volume is required?
  • Will the graft be exposed to substantial irrigation?
  • Does the site require focused placement or broader distribution?
  • Does the configuration require hydration before implantation?

Final product selection must remain consistent with the current Instructions for Use, the prepared graft site, institutional protocol and clinician judgment.

Configuration-specific preparation

Handling varies across the DBM portfolio

  1. 01

    Verify

Confirm the selected product, dimensions or volume, expiration date and package integrity.

  2. 02

    Open

Transfer the product to the sterile field using aseptic technique.

  3. 03

    Prepare

Use directly or hydrate according to the product-specific Instructions for Use.

  4. 04

    Shape

Mold, compress, pack or position the graft according to its geometry and the procedural plan.

  5. 05

    Place

Place within the prepared graft site consistent with the product labeling.

  6. 06

    Track

Complete the required allograft identification and tissue-tracking documentation.

FAQ

Common DBM questions

What is demineralized bone matrix?

DBM is processed human allograft bone from which much of the mineral content has been removed while portions of the native bone matrix are retained.

Are all DBM products putties?

No. EvoGraft DBM is available as putty, crush mix, strips, cubes, loose cortical fibers, fiber boats and OsteoBlend.

What is the difference between DBM Fibers and Fiber Boats?

DBM Fibers are supplied as loose cortical fibers selected by volume. Fiber Boats contain fibers formed into established dimensions for more controlled placement.

What is OsteoBlend?

EvoGraft OsteoBlend is composed of 70% demineralized cortical fibers and 30% demineralized cortical granules.

Does every DBM configuration require hydration?

No. Preparation requirements vary by product. Follow the current product-specific Instructions for Use.

Can DBM be combined with bone marrow aspirate or autograft?

Certain configurations may be used with other graft materials when permitted by their labeling and selected by the treating clinician. The current Instructions for Use govern.
